Spain Tax ID Number (TIN) Guide

Introduction

In Spain, a Tax Identification Number (TIN) serves as a unique identifier for individuals, businesses, and entities in all tax-related matters. Having the correct TIN is crucial to ensure compliance with Spanish tax regulations. All data presented in this guide is verified from official tax authority websites and trusted government sources.

Tax Identification Number Types

Spain utilizes several types of TINs, each designated for specific categories of taxpayers:

  • Número de Identificación Fiscal (NIF): This is the primary TIN used for both individuals and legal entities. For individuals, the NIF is identical to their Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) number. For legal entities, it was formerly known as the Código de Identificación Fiscal (CIF).
  • Número de Identificación de Extranjero (NIE): Assigned to foreign residents in Spain, the NIE starts with the letter ‘X’ or ‘Y’ and is used for tax and legal purposes.

TIN Format and Structure

The structure of each TIN type is as follows:

  • NIF for Individuals:
    • Format: 8 digits followed by a letter (e.g., 12345678A).
    • Structure:
      • First part: 8-digit unique identifier.
      • Last part: A single letter used as a checksum to validate the number.
  • NIF for Legal Entities:
    • Format: A letter, 7 digits, and a letter (e.g., A12345678).
    • Structure:
      • First part: A letter indicating the type of entity (e.g., ‘A’ for public limited companies).
      • Middle section: 7-digit unique identifier.
      • Last part: A single letter used as a checksum.
  • NIE:
    • Format: A letter, 7 digits, and a letter (e.g., X1234567T).
    • Structure:
      • First part: A letter (‘X’ or ‘Y’) assigned to foreign residents.
      • Middle section: 7-digit unique identifier.
      • Last part: A single letter used as a checksum.

The letters ‘I’, ‘Ñ’, ‘O’, and ‘U’ are excluded from the checksum calculation. The sequence of letters used for validation is: T, R, W, A, G, M, Y, F, P, D, X, B, N, J, Z, S, Q, V, H, L, C, K, E.
