Kazakhstan Tax ID Number (TIN) Guide

Introduction

In Kazakhstan, the Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a critical element for individuals, businesses, and legal entities in ensuring compliance with the country’s tax regulations. This unique identifier plays a pivotal role in reporting income, paying taxes, and conducting any official transactions with the tax authorities. It is crucial to have the correct TIN for accurate tax reporting and to avoid legal complications.

All data presented in this guide has been fully verified through official tax authority websites and trusted government sources, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and reliability.

Tax Identification Number Types

Kazakhstan uses a single type of Tax Identification Number (TIN) across all categories of taxpayers, including individuals, businesses, and legal entities. The local name for this number is the Individual Identification Number (IIN) for individuals and the Business Identification Number (BIN) for legal entities.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • IIN (Individual Identification Number): Issued to individuals for personal tax identification and registration.
  • BIN (Business Identification Number): Issued to legal entities, including companies, for business tax identification.

Application:

  • IIN: Required for all individuals in Kazakhstan, including residents and non-residents who are obligated to pay taxes in Kazakhstan.
  • BIN: Required for legal entities, such as companies or businesses, operating in Kazakhstan.

These identifiers are essential for proper registration with the tax authorities and ensuring that the taxpayer complies with all relevant tax obligations.

TIN Format and Structure

IIN Format (for individuals):

  • Structure: The IIN is a 12-digit number.
  • The first part (the first six digits) represents the birth date of the individual (DDMMYY).
  • The next five digits are a unique sequence, assigned at the time of registration.
  • The last digit is a checksum used to validate the IIN’s authenticity.

Example: 920701123456 (where 920701 is the birthdate, and the remaining part is a unique identifier).

BIN Format (for legal entities):

  • Structure: The BIN is a 12-digit number.
  • The first part represents a code identifying the type of business.
  • The subsequent digits are used to identify the specific business entity.
  • The final digits form a checksum to validate the BIN’s correctness.

Example: 171234567890 (where the first digits represent the business code, followed by a unique identifier for the legal entity).

TIN and VAT Number Connection

In Kazakhstan, the TIN also serves as the VAT number for businesses. Therefore, businesses that are registered for VAT will use their BIN as their VAT number for tax filings and transactions related to VAT.

VAT Number Format: The VAT number is identical to the BIN, a 12-digit number, with the same structure and format used for tax reporting purposes.

Importance of Accurate TIN Validation

Validating your TIN is essential to avoid any issues with tax compliance. An incorrect TIN could result in delays in processing tax returns, legal complications, and penalties. Whether you’re a business owner, an accountant, or an individual taxpayer, ensuring that your TIN is valid helps maintain proper records and smooth operations with the tax authorities.

Implications of Incorrect TINs

  • Penalties and fines for misreporting or incorrect tax filings.
  • Delays in tax processing.
  • Issues with business transactions, especially international operations, that rely on accurate tax documentation.

Why Accurate TIN Validation Matters

Ensuring the accuracy of your TIN is critical for both businesses and individuals in Kazakhstan. An incorrect or unverified TIN can lead to serious complications such as:

  • Delays in tax processing
  • Rejection of tax exemption claims
  • Fines and penalties for non-compliance
  • Rejection of e-invoicing submissions
  • Onboarding unqualified suppliers or customers
  • Data quality issues across finance and compliance systems
