Colombia Tax ID Number (TIN) Guide

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a crucial identifier for individuals, businesses, and other entities involved in tax-related activities in Colombia. It is required for activities such as tax filings, VAT (Value Added Tax) registration, and other tax obligations. Having an accurate TIN is essential for compliance with Colombian tax regulations and avoiding penalties or issues with tax authorities.

All the information in this guide has been 100% verified from official sources provided by Colombia’s tax authority and trusted government publications.

1. Tax Identification Number Types

In Colombia, the TIN is known as the NIT (Número de Identificación Tributaria), and it is used for both individuals and businesses. Below are the official TIN types:

  • NIT (Número de Identificación Tributaria): This is the primary TIN in Colombia, used by both individuals and businesses. It is issued by the Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales (DIAN), Colombia’s national tax authority.
  • Cédula de Ciudadanía (CC): For Colombian citizens, the Cédula de Ciudadanía number is used for individuals who are residents or nationals and is also a form of TIN for tax purposes.
  • Cédula de Extranjería (CE): For foreigners residing in Colombia, the Cédula de Extranjería is used to identify individuals, and it functions as their TIN for tax purposes in the country.

Businesses, corporations, and other legal entities in Colombia are issued an NIT number regardless of whether they are national or foreign. The NIT is used for a variety of tax-related matters, such as VAT and income tax registration.

Key Tax Authority: The official tax authority responsible for issuing TINs in Colombia is the Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales (DIAN)

2. TIN Format and Structure

The TIN in Colombia, known as the NIT, follows a specific format for both individuals and businesses. The format is consistent across all TIN types issued by the DIAN

  • Format: The NIT consists of a numeric value, generally between 6 to 10 digits, followed by a check digit (for validation purposes).
  • For Individuals (using Cédula de Ciudadanía or Cédula de Extranjería): The format typically consists of 9 digits (e.g., 123456789 for individuals with Cédula de Ciudadanía or Cédula de Extranjería).
  • For Businesses (legal entities): The NIT for businesses is also a numeric string, with 6-10 digits (e.g., 900123456 for companies).

Structure

  • First part: Represents the unique number assigned to the taxpayer (individual or business).
  • Second part: This part is a check digit, used to validate the authenticity of the NIT number.

It is crucial to follow the exact formatting guidelines to ensure the NIT is valid and compliant with Colombian regulations.

3. Issuing Authority and Registration Process

The official issuing authority for TINs in Colombia is the Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales (DIAN)

5. TIN and VAT Number Connection

The format for VAT numbers is the same as the NIT: a numeric value followed by a check digit (e.g., 900123456-7).

6. Why Accurate TIN Validation Matters

Ensuring the accuracy of your TIN is critical for both businesses and individuals in Colombia. An incorrect or unverified TIN can lead to serious complications such as:

  • Delays in tax processing

  • Rejection of e-invoicing submissions
  • Onboarding unqualified suppliers or customers
