In Argentina, the Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a crucial element for individuals, businesses, and legal entities to comply with tax regulations. The Federal Administration of Public Revenues (Administración Federal de Ingresos Públicos, AFIP) assigns TINs to uniquely identify taxpayers for tax purposes. Ensuring the correct TIN is used is essential for accurate tax filings, legal transactions, and financial operations. All information provided in this guide is verified from official AFIP resources and trusted government publications.

Tax Identification Number Types

Argentina utilizes two primary types of TINs:

  • CUIT (Clave Única de Identificación Tributaria): Assigned to businesses, legal entities, and self-employed individuals.
  • CUIL (Código Único de Identificación Laboral): Assigned to employees and individuals for social security and employment purposes.

The CUIT is mandatory for tax-related activities, while the CUIL is primarily used for employment and social security identification.

TIN Format and Structure

CUIT

  • Format: XX-XXXXXXXX-X
  • Structure:
    • First two digits (XX): Indicate the entity type (e.g., 20 for male individuals, 27 for female individuals, 30 for companies).
    • Middle eight digits (XXXXXXXX): Unique number assigned to the individual or entity.
    • Last digit (X): Checksum digit for validation.

CUIL

  • Format: XX-XXXXXXXX-X
  • Structure:
    • First two digits (XX): Indicate the individual’s gender (e.g., 20 for male, 27 for female).
    • Middle eight digits (XXXXXXXX): Correspond to the individual’s National Identity Document (DNI) number.
    • Last digit (X): Checksum digit for validation.

Issuing Authority and Registration Process

The AFIP is the official authority responsible for issuing TINs in Argentina.

  • Official Website: AFIP Servicios CF

CUIT Registration Process

  1. Eligibility: Individuals and entities engaging in taxable activities in Argentina.
  2. Required Documents:
    • National Identity Document (DNI) or passport.
    • Proof of address.
    • Documentation supporting the economic activity (e.g., business registration).
  3. Application Process:
    • Visit the AFIP website and access the “Inscripción Digital” section.
    • Complete the online registration form with personal or business details.
    • Upload the required documents.
    • Submit the application for processing.
  4. Fees: There are no fees associated with obtaining a CUIT.

TIN Verification and Lookup

AFIP provides an online tool to verify the validity of CUITs.

  • Verification Tool: Accessible through the AFIP website under the “Constancia de Inscripción” section.
  • Usage:
    • Enter the CUIT number to retrieve the taxpayer’s registration status and details.

TIN and VAT Number Connection

In Argentina, the CUIT also serves as the VAT (Value Added Tax) identification number.

  • VAT Registration: Entities must register for VAT through AFIP, and their CUIT is used for all VAT-related transactions.
  • Format: The CUIT format (XX-XXXXXXXX-X) is used as the VAT number without any modifications.

Why Accurate TIN Validation Matters

Ensuring the accuracy of your TIN is critical for both businesses and individuals in Argentina. An incorrect or unverified TIN can lead to serious complications such as:

  • Delays in tax processing
  • Rejection of tax exemption claims
  • Fines and penalties for non-compliance
  • Rejection of e-invoicing submissions
  • Onboarding unqualified suppliers or customers
  • Data quality issues across finance and compliance systems

Using the Argentina AFIP Servicios or TaxDo real-time global tax ID verification platform ensures accurate Tax ID validation, error reduction, and full compliance with Argentina tax laws.
